Can the inventory scanner pull information from inside a txt file.

Our company builds a custon app.  The versions of the files are stored in a .txt file on the client system.  Is there anyway I can customize the Inventory scanner to read that information.  I'm guessing no.  There are a lot of smart folks out there that use this product.
